I do not recall a time\u00a0when our family did not have dogs.\u00a0My earliest remembrance of\u00a0family pets are\u00a0a wonderful\u00a0little Beagle named Sparky and\u00a0a great Collie named Lady. Although neither were show dogs they were much loved family pets and both lived nice long lives.\u00a0 My first experience with show dogs\u00a0came\u00a0when I had taken a summer job at a local vet hospital and one of the employees bred and showed Parti Colored Cocker Spaniels.\u00a0She would bring\u00a0dog magazines to work to share and it was while reading one of these magazines that I saw a picture of what would become\u00a0&#8220;my breed&#8221;\u00a0&#8211; Gordon Setters.\u00a0I knew after watching her spend countless hours grooming her Cockers, they were not\u00a0the breed for me.\u00a0In September 1974 she invited me along to\u00a0a local show and it was there I started the search for a breeder of Gordon Setters.<\/p><p>I soon realized\u00a0finding a Gordon was not going to be an easy task but with persistence, several months later I did find a breeder, Mrs. Elizabeth Clark of Rockaplenty Kennels\u00a0fame. Finally the day came to make the\u00a0trip to the mountains of Virginia to\u00a0purchased my first show dog.\u00a0Over the years several Gordon&#8217;s followed\u00a0&#8211; several with Specialty wins, a Top Producing Stud dog and a Top Producing Dam.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-28e4dcf elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"28e4dcf\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-66 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-754fcb9\" data-id=\"754fcb9\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ecda154 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ecda154\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Also during these years I married and had two kids, Blake and Jenny. I continued\u00a0showing\u00a0on a limited basis at local shows when the kids\u00a0were young and\u00a0traveled\u00a0to a few specialties. I\u00a0fondly recall the days\u00a0in the ring showing my Gordons, my kids standing outside the ring\u00a0rooting me on. When I would come\u00a0out between classes Jenny would\u00a0handle the brushing to make sure every hair\u00a0was in place on whichever dog I was showing. Blake was more interested in\u00a0searching for discarded rubber bands he could use to shoot paper wads.<\/p><p>During\u00a0these years both Blake and Jenny were involved in ice skating and both were\u00a0quite accomplished skaters. The majority of our spare time was spent in the ice\u00a0rink or traveling to skating competitions.\u00a0Several years go by and\u00a0Jenny was\u00a0old enough to compete\u00a0in Junior Showmanship.\u00a0I told her to pick which\u00a0Gordon\u00a0she wanted to be her Juniors dog and I would teach her how to groom and\u00a0show it. Her response &#8211;\u00a0I&#8217;m not going to show one of those things! \u00a0&#8211; I want\u00a0my own breed.<\/p><p>A\u00a0few weeks later we were attending a show and I told her to\u00a0look around and see what breed interest\u00a0her and we would see about getting her\u00a0one. Within an hour she came running up\u00a0stating she found the breed she\u00a0wanted.\u00a0I just knew it would be something cute and fluffy\u00a0&#8211; OH NO!\u00a0she wanted\u00a0a Greyhound. Fortunately I was able to convince\u00a0her\u00a0a Greyhound was\u00a0too\u00a0large\u00a0and something a bit smaller would be best.\u00a0By lunch time she\u00a0had another\u00a0suggestion &#8211; a WHIPPET!!\u00a0My response was YUK &#8211; you must be kidding &#8211;\u00a0a Whippet\u00a0&#8211; they are icky. Kachina Whippets. She and fellow\u00a0breeder, Ann Taylor &#8211; Anndra Whippets had an\u00a0older female puppy available that\u00a0would fit our\u00a0needs.\u00a0So Jenny got her own show dog, a\u00a0Whippet &#8211;\u00a0Anndra&#8217;s\u00a0Princess Bride Kachina, SC &#8211; &#8220;Cindy&#8221;, I learned not to say a word about how\u00a0skinny they looked.<\/p><p>Jenny and Cindy soon became a fine tuned team and together\u00a0quickly earned the necessary wins\u00a0in Juniors, however Cindy did not really\u00a0like the show ring and Jenny tired of\u00a0Juniors,\u00a0she wanted to show in the\u00a0&#8220;real&#8221; ring.\u00a0Soon a second Whippet followed, a beautiful fawn brindle and\u00a0white puppy bitch,\u00a0Kachina Times Square V Anndra, SC &#8211; &#8220;Rachel&#8221;. Rachel\u00a0proved\u00a0more competitive in the conformation ring and finished with most\u00a0of her wins with Jenny handling her.\u00a0Breedings from these two\u00a0Whippet\u00a0girls we got our first home bred Dual Champion &#8211; Bert, out of Cindy, and our first Top 20 competitor &#8211; Emily, out of Rachel.<\/p><p>As in my early days of\u00a0breeding Gordon Setters, our goal is\u00a0to\u00a0breed healthy,\u00a0beautiful, and well\u00a0socialized family pets. Majority\u00a0of our dogs are sold solely as family\u00a0companions,\u00a0we\u00a0have been fortunate and\u00a0allowed\u00a0to show some of the ones sold\u00a0close to our home to their championships.\u00a0While I must admit\u00a0my first thoughts\u00a0of getting a\u00a0Whippet were\u00a0not favorable,\u00a0within a few\u00a0 weeks of having\u00a0our\u00a0first one I discovered what a wonderful breed they are. Within two years of\u00a0the first Whippet\u00a0moving into my house my Gordon Setters\u00a0days were all but\u00a0over. While I still love\u00a0the breed and believe there is\u00a0not a more beautiful\u00a0sight than a\u00a0well bred and correctly groomed Gordon, I&#8217;ve learned to admire them from afar.<\/p><p>Now with both kids grown our home is filled with wonderful Whippets and a\u00a0couple French Bulldogs.\u00a0 My husband, Chuck, loves the days spent on the lure\u00a0coursing field.\u00a0Jenny and I continue traveling to\u00a0shows &#8211; she,\u00a0the one\u00a0showing, me standing outside the ring rooting her on &#8211; and even though my son\u00a0could care less about the showing part he has his own\u00a0special Whippet as well.<\/p><p>To end this introduction I must add\u00a0a funny twist &#8211; somehow along the way I\u00a0ended up with one of those\u00a0labor intensive Cocker Spaniels,\u00a0a Parti Colored\u00a0one at that! While it was suppose to be Jenny&#8217;s dog\u00a0she somehow\u00a0stole my\u00a0heart. Thank goodness she grew up with Whippets and truly thinks she is just\u00a0a\u00a0cute and fluffy variety.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c030296 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"c030296\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div
